World Media Reacts To Margaret Thatcher's Death

Margaret Thatcher's death has dominated the global media schedules, with major newspaper websites leading with details of her death.

The New York Times used a 1985 photograph of Baroness Thatcher standing next to former US President Ronald Reagan and other world leaders, with the headline: "Margaret Thatcher, Who Remade Britain, Dies at 87."

The newspaper website also carried a profile and an article on the international reaction to her death.

The Washington Post also chose a photograph of Baroness Thatcher with President Reagan, its website showing the pair smiling while at Camp David in 1984.

Its headline was "Britain's 'Iron Lady' dies", and in a leader, the newspaper said that "outside Britain, she will be remembered primarily as a world figure".

In Argentina, the Clarin newspaper also had the news on the front page of its website, with a headline simply stating that Margaret Thatcher, UK prime minister during the Falklands War, had died.

Its main article described Baroness Thatcher as "one of the most controversial 20th century British Prime Ministers" and said that in the conflict over the Falklands Islands, known in Argentina as the Malvinas, she had "conducted herself with ferocity".

The English-language Buenos Aires Herald described Baroness Thatcher as being both "a loved and loathed political figure".

Penguin News, the Falkland Islands' weekly newspaper, used the headline: "Lady Thatcher's death received with great sadness in Falkland Islands" and reported that flags were being flown at half-mast.

The Australian newspaper's website had the news of Baroness Thatcher's death at the top, with a photograph of her smiling alongside the headline: "Death of Britain's Iron Lady."

The Sydney Morning Herald used the headline: "We've lost a great leader."

It also carried tributes from Australian politicians and a gallery of photographs of the former prime minister.

French newspaper Le Monde had several articles on its website, with the simple headline: "Margaret Thatcher is dead," and German newspaper Bild said the world was mourning the Iron Lady.
