The world’s first flying car, created by a company founded by six MIT graduates just over ten years ago, will go on sale next month.

The Terrafugia Transition is described as a ‘roadable’ aeroplane – a street-legal aeroplane which can convert between flying and driving modes in under a minute.

It travels at 100mph, and offers a ‘boost’ mode to give it a brief burst of extra power while flying.

Pre-sales of the vehicle will open in October, according to the Chinese news agency Xinhua.

Chris Jaran, CEO, Terrafugia said, ‘Flying cars are creating a new dimension of personal freedom. With Transition, Terrafugia’s first flying car product you can drive instead of fly if the weather is bad or simply land, expensive ongoing costs for aviation gas or hangar storage is eliminated, and you drive yourself to and from the airport.

‘The Transition is an ideal vehicle for weekend getaways, personal business, and for long commutes. For long-distance commuters, instead of only seeing your family on the weekends, you can be home for dinner every night.’

‘Future products like the TF-2 will behave similar to taxi and ride sharing programs, except you will be transported in the sky. Eventually, these vehicles will be autonomous which will increase safety across the board.’
