'World's first transgender doll' to go on sale this summer

An item billed as the "world's first transgender doll" has been debuted at the New York Toy Fair, which drew to a close earlier this week.

The doll is based on 16-year-old transgender activist and YouTube personality Jazz Jennings who, born a boy, transitioned to living as a girl at age five.

The doll, which is 18in high, will be priced at £71 when it goes on sale this July. It was created by the Tonner Doll Company, who modeled it on Ms Jennings, and comes dressed in a pink shirt and jeans shorts, similar to those worn by Jennings on the cover of her memoir, Being Jazz: My Life as a (Transgender) Teen.

Posting an image of the doll on her Instagram account, Jenner said:  "I hope that it can place transgender people in a positive light by showing that we are just like all other people.

"For those asking: the doll is considered to be the first 'transgender' doll because it's based on an individual who is trans.

"Of course it is still just a regular girl doll because that's exactly what I am: a regular girl!"

Robert Tonner of the Tonner Doll Company said: "Jazz stands for everything I respect from a human nature point of view-she's incredibly brave, intelligent, warm-hearted and creative.

"With the Jazz Jennings doll, Tonner continues its history of ground-breaking doll line introductions based on socially transformational heroes."
