World’s oldest cat celebrates his 31st birthday

Meet Nutmeg.

He’s just celebrated his 31st birthday, and now might just be the oldest cat in the world.

The ancient feline has been with owners Liz and Ian Finlay since 1990, when he turned up on their front door with an abscess on his neck.

When they took him to the vet, they were informed that Nutmeg was already five years old - which means that he’s now reached the grand old age of 31.

It’s a whole five years older than 26-year-old Cordroy, who is the current Guinness World Record holder for the world’s oldest cat.

But Liz and Ian don’t have any official documentation to verify the record - and they’re now looking for any shreds of evidence to prove that they took Nutmeg to the Cats Protection Trust in Newcastle in 1990.

And when it comes to longevity, there’s one secret behind Nutmeg’s 141 years of cat life - a Sunday roast

‘He only has three teeth left but he loves chicken so much he stands at the fridge door when he wants to be fed’, Ian said.

It seems like Nutmeg’s longevity could still continue for a few good years too - as he’s still fighting fit despite suffering a serious stroke last year which forced him to undergo emergency surgery.

‘He comes in every morning at 5am from his bed next door and we get up and feed him. Then he goes back to bed’, Liz said.

‘We have no children so he is our baby. Even if we go away, we have people come in and look after him. He had a lovely brown coat when we got him and now he is going grey, but he is doing well for his age.’

The oldest cat ever recorded was an American moggie known as Creme Puff, who died in 2005 at the ripe old age of 38.
