An ancient pyramid has been hidden in plain sight for thousands of years – buried inside a mountain in Indonesia, researchers have claimed.

Researcher Andang Bachtiar claims that a pyramid-like hill on top of Mount Padang in West Java isn’t natural – it as made by humans thousands of years ago.

The researchers believe that parts of the structure may date back to 10,000 years ago – a finding which would challenge our ideas of what prehistoric societies were capable of.

The researchers write, ‘Our studies proves that the structure does not cover just the top but also wrap around the slopes covering about 15 hectares area at least.

‘The structures are not only superficial but rooted into greater depth.’

The researchers analysed the site using ground penetrating radar and seismic tomography – although their findings have yet to be confirmed by other scientists.

Researchers Danny Hilman Natawidjaja told Live Science, ‘It’s a unique temple.

‘It’s not like the surrounding topography, which is very much eroded. This looks very young. It looked artificial to us.’
