A Worthy Cause? Crowdfund A Total Stranger Into Becoming A Millionaire

The thing that makes crowdfunding stand out is the worthy project behind the donations. Not any more.

Someone (no one knows who) has launch an online crowdfunding venture to simply make one person a millionaire.

That’s right: if you donate to this cause, the only thing you will be doing is making someone else rich.

We Made A Millionaire does exactly what it says on the tin, seeking $1 million dollars (£640,000) in donations to change someone’s life forever.

And, bizarrely, people are already sending in money to make someone they don’t know a millionaire, with almost $12,000 (£8,000) pledged so far.

On WeMadeAMillionaire.com, the project, which launched on July 28, describes itself as a 90-day “social experiment like no other”.

Donors can pledge through three different schemes: gold ($9.99); silver ($4.99) and bronze ($1.29), which gains them their image on one of the website’s three halls of fame. So, nothing, basically.

The person who takes all this money will remain anonymous but will document their year in the life as a millionaire.

“The collective power of the internet has the ability to make a complete stranger a millionaire,” says the site.

“I am that stranger.”
