Wounded Police Officer Cheered by Fellow Officers as She Leaves Hospital
Members of Chicago Police Department cheered Fernanda Ballesteros as she left a Chicago hospital, on June 6 after she was shot in the line of duty.
As she left the hospital, Ballesteros was greeted by police officers, bagpipes, and a mariachi band. Chicago Police said “hundreds” of fellow officers attended.
In a press conference, Superintendent David Brown said Ballesteros was performing a traffic stop with another officer on June 1 when a suspect opened fire on them. She was wounded and rushed to a hospital.
Fox 32 Chicago quoted quoted a statement from Ballesteros: “Thank you to Officer Young, my partner who had my back and carried me to safety. I’m forever grateful for his quick thinking and swift response. You were my guardian angel that night. This week has shown me and my family the true brotherhood of the Chicago Police Department and the brotherhood extends beyond me to caring and protecting my family as well.” Credit: Chicago Police Department via Storyful
