Wyoming Welcomes 2 Grizzly Bears in Effort to Boost Genetic Diversity

Two sub-adult grizzly bears were transferred from northwest Montana to Wyoming on July 30 and 31, respectively, as part of an initiative to boost the genetic diversity of the species, the Wyoming Game and Fish Department said.

The female bear was released on July 30 in the Blackrock drainage near Dubois, and the male was released the following day in the Yellowstone National Park.

This relocation comes in response to a 2019 appeal ruling mandating increased genetic diversity among grizzly bears in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Credit: Wyoming Game and Fish Department / Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks via Storyful
