James Arthur made a triumphant return to the show that made him a star

James Arthur made an emotional return to the X Factor stage tonight, as he performed his number one hit Say You Won’t Let Go to a packed Wembley Arena.

The singer won the show back in 2013, chalking up a win for Nicole Scherzinger who mentored him.

But things quickly went sour for James after a string of Twitter spats, accusations of homophobia and some questionable behaviour with fans.

James was eventually dumped by Syco - Simon’s record label - in June 2014, with Simon Cowell saying he wished James had kept his mouth shut and let his records do the talking.

It takes a brave man to return to the stage where it all began after that little lot. So props to James who performed his single flawlessly, and even got a standing ovation from the judges.

Dermot O’Leary asked a beaming James how it felt to be back to which James replied: “Ridiculous. Ridiculous and surreal.”

Nicole was obviously delighted to see her protege singing again, saying: “I’m so proud that we get to be back here together. The cream rises to the top, you’re back on top where you belong. I love you. You’re the best X Factor winner the show has ever had.”

James thanked her and then took the opportunity to remind everyone that tomorrow is World Mental Health Day. “Please hashtag glitch,” he urged the audience. “Let’s get people talking about it.”

It’s good to have you back, James.

Meanwhile, Saara and Bratavio were left to battle it out in the sing-off, while Freddie was saved by the lifeline.

Bratavio were the first act to be sent home after performing a dodgy extended version of The Only Way Is Essex theme tune. Kidding. We know it’s really by Yazz.

Bye bye boys!
