X Factor 2016: Emily Middlemass misses out as Matt Terry beats her in sing-off for place in next week's final

There was a shock for X Factor viewers on tonight’s live results show as fan favourite Matt Terry faced being in the bottom two for the first time.

Viewers votes put 5 After Midnight and current favourite to win Saara Aalto straight through to next week’s final.

Shockingly, that left Matt to face Emily Middlemas in the dreaded sing-off.

Louis Tomlinson lookalike, Matt, has been a favourite of both fans and judges to walk away with the title. So it came as a shock when his name was read out.

He went on to perform an emotional version of Christina Aguilera’s Hurt – complete with falsetto voices.

And he impressed Twitter.

Emily chose to sing Birdy’s Wings – and did a pretty good job of it too.

But it wasn’t enough to send her through to the finals, with all judges apart from Simon choosing to send her home.

Louis Walsh simply said: “The act I’m sending through is Matt Terry”

Nicole said: “Emily, that was one of the most beautiful performances you’ve done for us. But of course the act I’m sending through is my Matt Terry.”

Sharon said: “Emily, that was a truly beautiful performance. But the act I’m sending through to the final is Matt.”

That means the 2016 X Factor finalists are Matt, 5 After Midnight and Saara Aalto.
