The X Factor suffered a huge blunder live on air as Danny Tetley had to restart his performance because the wrong singer was announced.

Social media erupted at the awkward moment, as Mr Tetley was introduced wrongly as Anthony Russell.

The club singer was forced to restart mid-performance after saying: “That’s thrown me off, start again.”

Mr Tetley began singing Mariah Carey’s Hero, and was only seconds into the song before he demanded a restart.

He received cheers and encouragement from the judges to restart though, and was even praised by Simon Cowell after the performance.

Mr Cowell said: “Don't feel bad about what happened because it made you better in my opinion, so who cares?"

Louis Tomlinson added: "The pressure of what just happened to you and you picked yourself up and delivered that vocal, you should be really proud of yourself."

Dermot O’Leary then later apologised for the mistake, before joking about it.

Viewers were less than impressed with the blunder though.

Marc Johnson wrote: “ANTHONY RUSSELL!!!!!!!!” His name’s Danny mate #awks #XFactor.”

While another user wrote: “Bit of a disaster first night, felt sorry for Danny Tetley too. Fancy announcing the wrong person.”
