X Factor’s boy band contestants United Vibe were left stunned last week when their performance was slated by the judges and their own mentor Robbie Williams urged them to change their name.

Williams said the name was ‘terrible’ but the teen band who were previously known as Vibe 5 told us they won’t be changing it.

“We’re not changing our name,” United Vibe member Jon Guelas said.

“The fans that voted for us they all like the name they have made a hand signature for us. We are going to stick with it!” he added.

Despite the criticism, they say Williams is an ‘amazing’ mentor, and surprisingly down to earth.

“I don’t think people realise that even though he’s a massive solo star and was in one of the biggest boybands ever – you just wouldn’t even think it meeting him. He’s so down to earth and such a nice guy,” fellow member Kieran Harrison said.

This season’s X Factor has of course not been without its controversy. Not only has it had record low ratings, but married judges Robbie Williams and Ayda Field have been accused of colluding.

But Elliot Horne says that Williams and Field are absolutely in competition with one another.

“They are way too competitive to do that!” Horne said.

And how do they feel with the inevitable comparisons to One Direction? Very flattered, says Harrison.

“We love One Direction. Their success is incredible. We feel honoured and happy to be compared to them. Of course their sound is very different to ours and they are five very different boys. But they’re great!” he said.

And while it’s still very early days for the burgeoning boy group, they’ve already got quite a fan base going. Any memorable fan encounters yet? Quite a few they say.

“I’ve had a few amazing fan experiences! They are the people that pick up the phone and vote. It’s brilliant to put a face to the name.

“Once I was out with my family and I put on Instagram live where I was in Ealing and when I came out of the restaurant there were two girls waiting. That was crazy – obviously that has never happened to me before!” member Jack Tisdale said.

“Blaise [Duncan] gets handed lots of flowers from fans – all the time! I’m so jealous!” Guelas added.

X Factor continues Saturday at 8.35pm.
