We may have only just learned the news that another JRR Tolkien biopic is in the works, but a potential leading man has already been attached to the film.

Hollywood moves quickly, huh?

Yep, according to The Hollywood Reporter, X-Men star Nicholas Hoult is in line to play a young version of the legendary Lord of the Rings author.

And considering he's recently taken on the role of author JD Salinger, we think Nick would be a pretty safe bet.

The new Tolkien biopic – the aptly-titled Tolkien – is set to cover the author's formative years shortly before the outbreak of the First World War.

David Gleeson and Pride's Stephen Beresford are reportedly writing the script, which will explore the early years of Tolkien as he finds friendship, love and inspiration at school.

Finnish director Dome Karukoski (The Home of Dark Butterflies) is said to be taking the helm. So, there's no Peter Jackson this time around, we're afraid.

But before we see get to see Hoult as Tolkien – if the rumours are true, of course – the actor is due to reprise his role as Beast in the upcoming Dark Phoenix movie.

The '90s-tastic X-Men spin-off is set to focus on a "dark" and "powerful" force growing inside Sophie Turner's Jean Grey. Sounds dark indeed.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix will hit cinemas on November 2, 2018.
