X-Men: Dark Phoenix appears to feature the return of the Colossus actor Daniel Cudmore in some mysterious casting.

Cudmore played the Russian superhero in director Bryan Singer's original X-Men movies, before handing the role over to Stefan Kapičić for the character's return in X-spin-off Deadpool.

That recasting made it slightly odd when Cudmore was spotted on the scene of Simon Kinberg's next gen X-Men sequel Dark Phoenix over the summer.

While he'd previously refused to engage fans asking about his role, Cudmore seemed to reveal that he had returned to the X-Men franchise in some way when quizzed by a fan on Twitter on Tuesday (September 18).

"I can't comment on what character I'm playing, sorry," he tweeted.

No word yet on if he's been hired to play a totally new X-character or if we're about to have two Colossi in a cinematic universe already racked with continuity complexities.

The upcoming sequel brings back James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence and Nicholas Hoult as the grown-up X-Men squad mentoring young mutants Tye Sheridan, Sophie Turner and Alexandra Shipp.

In chatting about her surprise return to the franchise as Mystique, Jennifer Lawrence recently explained to Digital Spy: "My contract was up, I didn't have to do another one, but if I didn't do another one, what would her story be?

"I felt like I owed it to the fans, and I owed it to the character to follow her journey, to be fair to the movies, and not be like, 'I don't want to do another X-Men!' And then I just never show up and everyone's very confused about the Mystique they've been following for the last three films."

Kinberg has also cast Jessica Chastain as the film's main antagonist, with the actress recently denying that she'll play the alien empress known as Lilandra.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix will arrive on November 2, 2018.
