X-Men: Dark Phoenix may see our favourite mutants head into space to really do the classic comic book storyline justice.

We got a glimpse of Jean Grey's dark Phoenix alter ego in X-Men: Apocalypse, with a young Jean played by Sophie Turner, while it was also explored in X-Men: The Last Stand when Famke Janssen played the character.

But that latter film shied away from the original setting of parts of the story – outer space.

And now it seems that X-Men: Dark Phoenix may actually explore that element, according to Screen Rant, with producer Hutch Parker hinting as much.

Referring to the Guardians of the Galaxy films, he said: "We're very aware of the challenge that those movies pose and what it sort of demands of us as storytellers mining, again, one of the great comic runs in the Dark Phoenix Saga.

"Our hope and expectation is to try and do something that feels different, that takes the audience into a different tone and a different sense of cinematic style that is appropriately suited to the story we're telling."

When asked whether that means X-Men: Dark Phoenix is going "cosmic", Parker replied: "That is certainly a possibility. Yes."

The only actor confirmed for the film currently is Turner as Jean Grey, but rumours continue that Jennifer Lawrence and Michael Fassbender will return in their roles as Mystique and Magneto.

A director also needs to be confirmed, with the possibility that X-Men producer and writer Simon Kinberg may make his debut.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix is due to be released in the UK on November 2, 2018.

It will be the third X-Men universe film Fox is releasing next year – with X-Men: New Mutants opening April 13, and Deadpool 2 opening June 1.
