It's a scene we've seen many times before, but that hasn't stopped Professor X and Magneto from reuniting for a spot of chess in new X-Men: Dark Phoenix reshoot photos.

Pictured engaging in a bit of board game frivolity, Charles and Erik (played by James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender respectively) have actually filmed chess scenes in every primary X-Men movie except 2016's X-Men: Apocalypse.

It's a long-running pastime that producers obviously couldn't wait to bring back for the next instalment in the franchise.

No other regular cast members can be seen in the snap, meaning it's probably another one-on-one scene for the pair to engage in a battle of wits.

It isn't the first glimpse of the much-talked-about Dark Phoenix reshoots though.

Earlier this month, set photos teased a massive showdown between Sophie Turner's young Jean Grey and Jessica Chastain's tricky villain Smith.

News of the extensive three months of reshoots broke in March, with the film's ending reportedly undergoing a total overhaul.

To put things into context, the film's principal photography also took place over three months, from June to October 2017, so that's a fair amount of reworking going on.

In other X-Men news, Anna Paquin said she doesn't think she'll ever play Rogue again because of the confusing status of the X-Men Cinematic Universe.

Paquin last reprised her role as the superhero in X-Men: Days of Future Past, but the actress said there's been "so many spin-offs and reboots and TV shows" that she doesn't know "where Rogue or the other original characters fit into the current plot lines".

"It's probably not going to happen," she added.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix is scheduled for release on February 14, 2019.
