X-Men: New Mutants is going to be something we've never experienced before in the X-Men universe.

The spin-off will star Game of Thrones' Maisie Williams as Wolfsbane and Split's Anya Taylor-Joy as Magik, two of five teenage mutants who must learn to control their newly-acquired superpowers.

And that will lead to a whole different kind of X-Men movie.

"We are making a full-fledged horror movie set within the X-Men universe," director Josh Boone told EW. "There are no costumes. There are no supervillains. We're trying to do something very, very different."

The New Mutants comic series was created by Chris Claremont in the early 1980s, with the movie inspired by the run of the comic after artist Bill Sienkiewicz joined in 1984 when the series became "Stephen King meets John Hughes".

Despite the fact that it's going for a horror movie vibe, the movie is shooting for a PG-13 rating and not the R rating that has been given to Logan and Deadpool with such success recently.

Boone is working on New Mutants with his lifelong best friend Knate Lee and the two used their love of Stephen King and Marvel Comics to pitch their vision for the movie to Fox.

"We love that Fox wants to make all these different X-Men spin-offs as drastically different as they can," enthused Boone. "You can't have a bigger nerd or fan making this. It's so important to me."

X-Men: New Mutants is set to go into production this July, with both 13 Reasons Why star Henry Zaga and Rosario Dawson potentially set to join the spin-off before then. It will be released on April 13, 2018.
