The X-Men finally properly come to TV in an extended look at Fox's The Gifted.

Burn Notice writer Matt Nix's intriguing spin on Marvel's mutants takes place on the periphery of the X-Men universe, as a pair of gifted teens seek shelter from a world that fears and hates.

Anti-mutant activist Reed and Caitlin Strucker (Stephen Moyer and Amy Acker) always assumed that they were raising two normal kids (Natalie Alyn Lind and Percy Hynes), but nothing could be further from the truth.

Lauren and Andy's budding mutant power make them a threat to the government's anti-mutant policies, forcing the family to go on the run to protect themselves.

In their travels, they'll meet a mutant resistance led by the charismatic Thunderbird (Blair Redford) as well as classic X-Men Polaris (Emma Dumont) and Blink (Jamie Chung).

Showrunner Matt Nix has previously explained that he views The Gifted as a coming-of-age story, which naturally connects well to Marvel's mutant mythos.

"It's a story that definitely comes at the world of mutants from the side," Nix added.

"One of the things that's come out [publicly] is the idea of a family that discovers their kids are mutants and has to go on the run. The movies and the comics have generally started with the X-Men and encountered the world outside from the perspective of the X-Men.

"This show flips that on its head, in the sense that it doesn't exclusively take place inside the world of people who are already X-Men and know that world."

The Gifted will premiere on Monday, October 2 at 9pm ET on Fox in the US.
