Fox's long-awaited X-Men spin-off New Mutants is shaping up nicely by casting one of the stars of Netflix's hit series 13 Reasons Why.

Henry Zaga has officially joined the new film, with director Josh Boone confirming on Instagram that Zaga has landed the role of Roberto da Costa, otherwise known as Sunspot, a Brazilian mutant with the ability to manipulate solar energy.

Zaga's casting puts him in the movie alongside Anya Taylor-Joy as Illyana Rasputin – aka Magik, the sister of X-Men mainstay Colossus – and Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams as lycanthropic shapeshifter Rahne Sinclair/Wolfsbane.

Rosario Dawson has also recently signed up to the New Mutants film too in the role of Dr Cecilia Reyes – a mutant capable of generating energy fields – so it's not looking like Zaga is in bad company at all.

The Brazilian actor is perhaps best known for his role as Tony's boyfriend Brad in 13 Reasons Why, but he's also starred alongside Sarah Hyland in Netflix movie XOXO and as Josh Diaz in Teen Wolf.

New Mutants is based on the comic about a young class of X-Men, including Cannonball, Karma, Danielle Moonstar, Sunspot, Wolfsbane and Magik, and is on track to start shooting this summer.

Early reports suggested that Charles Xavier will be appearing in the movie, with Taylor-Joy revealing that her Split co-star James McAvoy would be making his fourth outing as the powerful mutant, although later stories suggested that might not be the case after all.

X-Men: New Mutants is released on April 13, 2018.
