Microsoft has unveiled the price of its official expanded storage cards for the Xbox Series X and S, which will add 1TB of extra space.

These 1TB (terabyte) storage cards are being made by Seagate in partnership with Xbox and they are being sold for £220.

We found one listing of the Seagate Expansion Card for Xbox Series X / S 1TB on Alza, but it will be on sale elsewhere according to the official Seagate website.

According to the product information, this type of card is “the only available expansion card that replicates the Xbox Velocity Architecture - providing faster load times, richer environments, and more immersive gameplay”. This means it can only be used for next-generation games.

Unfortunately, when you consider the digital-only Xbox Series S's inferior storage, the price doesn't seem all that cheaper in the long-run.

The Series S comes with a 512GB SSD, but when you consider games like Call of Duty: Warzone clocking in at over 100 GB alone, these factory storage numbers aren't going to get you very far, especially when you'll be downloading everything since the console can't run physical game discs.

An expansion card almost seems like a necessity, for the Series S, which isn't ideal when it roughly costs about the same as another Xbox console; combining the costs of the two makes it more expensive than the more powerful Xbox Series X, which comes with 1TB storage by default.

As reported by The Verge, Microsoft has said while this drive is currently the only one which will interface correctly with Xbox Velocity architecture, there could be other expandable storages released later to help drive down the price.

You will be able to use external 3.1+ USB hard drive with the Series S and X, however, this will only allow you to run Xbox One, 360 and original Xbox games from the external storage.

Microsoft spokesperson Larry Hyrb said, “Games optimised for Xbox Series X & Velocity Architecture need to be run from the internal SSD or the Expandable Storage Drive".
