Xbox series X stock - live: Could Currys restock consoles next? What to know

Almost a full year since launching, the Xbox series X remains sold out across all UK retailers. As is the case with so many other high-end electronics, global chip production shortages have effectively halted production of Microsoft’s next-generation console, leaving shoppers in the UK wondering where to buy the new Xbox.

When it does appear in stock, online shoppers are quick to react and the Xbox series X sells out within minutes, sometimes seconds. Knowing when and where the Xbox will restock next is key to grabbing one in time.

That’s why we’ve launched our Xbox stock alerts liveblog. If you’re wondering where to buy an Xbox series X in the UK today, we’re here to help. Below, we’ll update you with the latest live restock updates as soon as they happen, as well as any news on predicted restock dates, new games and accessories and milestone events.

Since there are currently no restocks to report on, let’s go over some basic tips that will help you secure the console when the time comes.

  • Register an account and save your payment details at each of the retailers that stock the Xbox series X. You can find all of them in the main article above

  • Are you a BT customer, or know somebody who is? Register your interest on the BT site to get exclusive access to BT’s next drop

  • Download retailers’ apps (if they have one) and add the Xbox series X to your wish list or “save for later” list

  • When the console drops, use the direct link in your wish list to add the Xbox to your trolley – this reportedly has a higher success rate than navigating using the website

  • Keep note of the prices of bundles to ensure you’re getting an actually good deal. Generally speaking, the console itself is £450, controllers are £50, the official headset is £90, and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate costs £11 per month. Newly released games are typically £60, but retailers often bundle older games with the console

  • The pay-as-you-go Xbox All Access programme is good value for money, so long as you don’t already have a Game Pass subscription

We’re coasting towards the end of the month, so it feels like a good time to brush up on the Xbox fundamentals.

There are two next-gen Xboxes, the less powerful Xbox series S and the top-of-the-range Xbox series X.

All existing and future Xbox games will run on both consoles, though on the less powerful Xbox series S the overall graphics quality will somehow be inferior. The Xbox series S also does not have a disc drive, and can therefore only play downloaded games. It is also much easier to find in stock than the series X, as well as cheaper, costing just £249 (Amazon.co.uk).

Here are the details, if you’re into comparing teraflops.

Xbox series S specs:

  • CPU: Custom Zen 2 8-core CPU

  • GPU: 4 TFLOPS, 20 CUS

  • Memory: 10GB GDDR6

  • Storage: 512GB SSD

  • Resolution: 1440p at 60fps

Xbox series X specs:

  • CPU: AMD 8-core Zen 2 @ 3.8 GHz

  • GPU: 12TFLOPS, 52 CUs @ 1.825 GHz

  • Memory: 16GB GDDR6

  • Storage: 1TB custom WD SSD, optional 1T

  • Resolution: 4K at 60fps

Did you know Microsoft has recently rolled out a new update for the Xbox Series X?

Released over the weekend, the upgraded software introduces a brand-new 4K dashboard. For context, before the upgrade, the console’s dashboard was 1080p upscaled to 4K, while now it will be rendered in native 4K resolution.

The new software also brings an Xbox Night mode allowing players to customize and dim the light of the connected display, and a Quick Settings menu to turn on and off some accessibility settings without leaving a game.

While we wait for more Xbox stock to drop, you should know we also have a liveblog to track restocks of Sony’s latest console.

Generally speaking, the Xbox series X has been harder to get than the PS5, with fewer restocks in the UK in the last couple of months.

The less powerful Xbox series S, on the other hand, is widely available from a number of retailers, including Amazon, Currys, and Argos.

Black Friday is only a few weeks away and, like every year, it will bring about the biggest shopping bonanza of the year.

Of course, the event regularly sees the availability of a number of gaming deals every year.

It's unlikely that Microsoft will discount the Xbox series X during Black Friday, considering the shortage of them, but you will be able to stock up on games and accessories at bargain prices, for when you finally do get one.

To be in the know before and during the Black Friday weekend, you can bookmark our gaming deals guide.

 (8BitDo)
(8BitDo)

8BitDo is a brand specialising in tech gadgets for gaming consoles, particularly wifi adapters to use third-party controllers with the Nintendo Switch, as well as original controllers for different gaming consoles.

The company has recently released two new media remotes for Xbox consoles, designed to enable players to navigate all menus and apps with dedicated Xbox buttons. The controllers are particularly useful if you often use your Xbox as a media player for films or TV shows.

Officially licensed by Microsoft, the remotes come in two versions. The white “short edition” costs £17.49 (Amazon.co.uk), while the black “long edition”, which features a numpad, currently costs £19.97 (Amazon.co.uk).

Both versions are compatible with the Xbox One, Xbox series S, and Xbox series X.

While we wait for more Xbox series X stock to drop, it’s worth mentioning that Nintendo’s new Switch console is now available.

The Switch OLED introduces a slightly larger, brand-new screen with improved colours and viewing angle.

The console also features some more updates when compared with its predecessor, including a new colour palette, and a refined kickstand.

But is the new Switch worth the upgrade? We have reviewed the console so you can make an informed decision.

When will Very restock the Xbox series X?

09:20 , Alessandro Mascellino

Very is one of the most consistent retailers in restocking Microsoft’s latest console.

The Xbox series X was last available at Very on 19 October, and before that on 14 September.

Over the summer, the online retailer also restocked the Xbox on 24 August and 20 July.

While these are not extremely regular restocking patterns, they do hint at the console being available towards the end of the month.

When will Smyths Toys restock the Xbox series X?

09:00 , Alessandro Mascellino

October was a bit of a quiet month for Xbox Series X restocks, and Smyths Toys seems to have followed this trend, with no restocks throughout the whole month. However, the toy store is known to release additional consoles at the end of the month, with the last known restock registered on 24 September.

The retailer has also been known to restock the console in small numbers and in seemingly random branches of its stores around the country. If you’re passing by a store, it’s worth dropping in to ask about the Xbox – Smyths often restocks in-store without listing availability online.

Alongside Game and 4gadgets, Smyths Toys is one of three retailers partnering with Microsoft to sell the console through the Xbox All Access credit programme. An alternative to paying full price for the console, Xbox All Access lets you pay for your console in monthly instalments over two years.

Will we see an Xbox restock at Currys later today?

08:45 , Alessandro Mascellino

Currys PC World is the first retailer today that looks likely to restock the Xbox series X.

Previous restocking patterns saw the technology retailer offering three restocks in August, but only a single one in September, and none throughout October.

It’s the end of the month though, and it’s likely Currys will drop some more stock over the next couple of days.

When a drop happens, the main Currys site gets hammered with traffic, so we recommend using the app to complete your purchase.

Welcome back, Xbox hunters
