Years & Years frontman Olly Alexander has opened-up about starring in the movie The Riot Club, admitting that it was a "horrible experience".

Before finding fame in the pop group, the singer carved out a successful career as an actor in a number of movies and TV shows, one of his biggest credits being the 2014 film.

In it, he starred as Toby Maitland, one of the members of the fictional exclusive all-male dining club at Oxford University, which is seen as a satire of the notorious Bullingdon Club and elitism.

When asked about making the movie and playing the role by a fan on Graham Norton's Radio 2 show, Olly didn't exactly recall a glowing experience.

"It was actually quite a horrible experience filming it, only because it was so hot and we were wearing really, really fancy white tie," he said.

"And I've never been in an environment with that many men sort of trying to out-shine each other and it felt a bit like... I don't know, it was kind of a bizarre environment."

Meanwhile, a few months ago the openly gay singer revealed that he was advised to keep quiet about his sexuality when Years & Years were first signed.

"She said, with very good intentions I'm sure: 'Why does anybody need to know about your sexuality?" he recalled of a media trainer.

"What business is it who you go to bed with? Do you really want to invite personal questions like that? Maybe it's better to not say anything about your sexuality at all.'

"I ignored her advice."
