Russell Tovey is set to star alongside Rose Matafeo and Minnie Driver in season 2 of the BBC Three comedy series Starstruck.

Tovey, known for playing Daniel Lyons in Years and Years and Budgie in comedy-drama Gavin & Stacey, will play an "annoying" director in the series which is written by Edinburgh Comedy Award-winning writer, Matafeo, who also stars as the lead.

In a synopsis shared by IMDb, the series follows a millennial in London "juggling two dead-end jobs" and "navigating the awkward morning-after-the-night-before" when she realises the consequences of accidentally sleeping with a film star (Nikesh Patel).

Speaking on The One Show on February 3, Matafeo told the hosts Alex Jones and Ronan Keating that she "can't believe" the amazing actors that star in the series while also officially confirming that Driver will be reprising her role.

She went on to say that Tovey was an "incredible get" before explaining what to expect from his role.

"I think it was perhaps a cathartic experience for him, I'm not sure," she admitted.

"He is so funny in it and it is really scary to see proper actors come in and act because I am truly not a proper actor, I come from doing comedy and I'm like 'you know your lines, this is amazing' – they teach me a lot."

BBC Three, which airs the show, was revived as a linear service on Tuesday (February 1), nearly six years after it exclusively moved online.

Starstruck season 2 airs on BBC Three on February 7 at 10pm. Starstruck season 1 is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
