A Russian Instagram influencer was found dead in a suitcase covered in stab wounds - but who was she and why was she killed?

Yekaterina Karaglanova, who was also a qualified doctor, was found dead by her landlord in Moscow on July 26.

The Russian Instagram influencer, 24, who had around 85,000 followers on the social media platform when she was found dead but now has around 100,000, would regularly share images of her luxurious travels.

Police have said that CCTV showed an ex-boyfriend visiting her home in the days before her appearance.

On Wednesday it was reported that Maxim Garayev, the ex-lover of Yekaterina, had confessed to her killing, according to the Daily Mail.

The 33-year-old seemingly claimed the victim had “insulted” his sexual prowess and earning power.

“She was insulting my sexual prowess and earning power. I could not stand that. I stabbed her with a knife at least five times around her neck and chest,” he reportedly said in a police video.

When he was asked if he regretted it, he said he did and would help police with the investigation.

Who was Yekaterina Karaglanova?

The 24-year-old was known as @kattie_loves_life on Instagram where she shared images of her life.

Her Instagram feed was full of pictures of her in exotic locations and her followers compared her to the actress Audrey Hepburn.

She had recently graduated from the prestigious Pirogov Russian National Research Medical University and was a doctor practising dermatology.

Besides her medical profession, she had also been a beauty pageant contestant.

What about her personal life?

The victim was said to be planning a trip to the Netherlands to celebrate her birthday, which would have been on July 30, with an older man.

Not much is known about Yekaterina’s family, though we it was them who raised the alarm after they had not heard from her in several days.

Her family contacted the landlord who checked her flat and subsequently found the suitcase which her body was stuffed into.

A friend, Marina Nikitina, told local Russian network Ren TV that “there was information that somebody did not like her”.

What did she show on Instagram?

Yekaterina was clearly a travel lover and posted various pictures of her trips, which included Santorini, Venice and Paris.

Her final Instagram post showed her on vacation in the Greek island of Corfu. The caption read that she liked to "travel often, but in each country I spend no more than 3-5 days."

She also said: "I remember in detail every trip, all beautiful places, funny stories".
