Yellowstone fans furious about shock character death as S5 returns
Yellowstone season 5 spoilers follow.
Fans of Western drama Yellowstone had to pick up their jaws off the floor when the second part of season 5 opened with a huge death.
While viewers were prepared not to see a lot of former protagonist John Dutton after Kevin Costner's exit, the new chapter led on a shocker when the character was found dead in the first few minutes.
In the ninth episode of Taylor Sheridan's series, titled 'Desire Is All You Need', Costner's Governor of Montana can be seen lying dead on the bathroom floor after suffering a gunshot wound to the head. However, Costner's face is not shown, meaning the actor didn't return for the scene and a stand-in replaced him for the dramatic moment.

John's son Jamie and Montana attorney general, played by Wes Bentley, finds his dad and calls a press conference, announcing that the Duttons' patriarch was found dead by suicide.
Following the tragic scenes, fans of Yellowstone couldn't contain their disappointment at seeing John bowing out in such a fashion, particularly after series director Christina Voros hinted at Costner playing an "integral" role in the show's epilogue.
"can I sue the producers of Yellowstone for permanent emotional damage 30 seconds into this episode," one person wrote on Twitter/X.
"John Dutton deserved to go out like a gladiator, not a victim. Completely undoes the series. I'm not a fan at all how #Yellowstone handled Costner's departure," another viewer offered.
One angered fan totally disagreed with the twist, writing: "If THAT'S how they decide to end a great character like John Dutton...THAT'S BULLS**T."

"John Dutton was a fantastic character, and despite the Kevin Costner drama, he deserved a better goodbye than Yellowstone gave him," was another comment.
While many seem to be unimpressed by the director the show has taken, others are staying in for the ride and celebrated the remaining cast's performances, especially Kelly Reilly's as John's daughter, Beth Dutton.
"Plenty of folks are saying they won’t watch Yellowstone anymore with how they had John Dutton go out. As a character purist, I get it. But Kelly Reilly's performance deserves fans seeing the season through," they wrote.
Yellowstone may be ending soon — though reports teased that a sixth season could be in the works — but upcoming spin-off The Madison, featuring Michelle Pfeiffer, Suits' Patrick J Adams and Firefly Lane's Beau Garrett, is due to premiere next year.
Yellowstone returned for season 5 part 2 on Sunday, November 10 in the US and on Monday, November 11 in the UK. It streams on Paramount+.
