Bans which will see people fined £500 for drinking alcohol and £1000 for urinating or defecating in public are being rolled out in an area of a seaside town along the Yorkshire coast.

North Yorkshire Council introduced a new Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) this morning around St Nicholas Cliff in Scarborough, which will be in full effect and in place for three years.

The council hopes that the order will stop the consumption of alcohol in that area and was widely wanted by residents when the council collected responses from a consultation earlier this year.

This means that if a person drinks alcohol or does not surrender it after been warned by a Police Officer, PCSO or person authorised by the council within the confines of the designated area, they can be issued with a penalty notice, which, if not paid, can lead to court proceedings.

Businesses and licensed premises with outdoor seating areas will not be affected by this legislation.

North Yorkshire Police’s senior operational manager for Coast Command, Supt Rachel Wood said: “Tackling street-drinking and related anti-social behaviour is vital for a family-friendly town like Scarborough.

“The introduction of the new Public Spaces Protection Order is therefore greatly welcomed. It enhances our collective power to take direct action against individuals and groups whose behaviour has a detrimental impact in the town centre especially.

“Together with our council colleagues, we will continue to do all we can to improve the safety and quality of life for residents, businesses and visitors to Scarborough.”
