Young Australian Soldier Pays Tribute to Family Member Died in Battle of Polygon Wood

Corporal Kyle Genner of the Australian Army visited the grave of his great-great-great uncle, Private Arthur James Genner, at Bedford Cemetery, Belgium, to mark the centenary of the Battle of Polygon Wood on September 26.

Genner said his uncle was killed en route to the battle in 1917, during which at least 5,770 Anzacs were killed n fending off German forces in Belgium.

“This visit is extra special for me because I’m actually here as part of the Australian Defence Force’s contribution to the centenary commemorations for the Battle of Polygon Wood. It’s quite surreal seeing a family name on a headstone in Belgium, but it does fill me with a lot of pride to be able to honour his memory by participating in the centenary commemoration events,” said Genner.
