Manchester United enter their Champions League campaign on a wave of optimism. Cristiano Ronaldo’s brace in the 4-1 demolition of Newcastle United over the weekend reminded fans (and opponents) that he is still capable of turning games on his own. And with fellow new recruits Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho bringing a heap of European experience with them, there are now two clubs in Manchester with realistic aims of conquering the continent.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team have arrived in Bern to take on Young Boys, the four-time defending Swiss Super League champions. It is the second meeting between the clubs with United having won both encounters - which came in Young Boys’ first and only Champions League group stage - in 2018 by scores of 1-0 in Manchester and 3-0 in Bern.

Young Boys are managed by David Wagner who was in charge of Huddersfield Town when the newly promoted side beat United 2-1 in 2017.

Man United team news

Edinson Cavani has yet to regain full fitness and has not travelled with the squad which will likely see Ronaldo start up front again. Marcus Rashford, Scott McTominay, Alex Telles and Phil Jones are also absent.

No further injuries will concern Solskjaer and he will likely pick a similar team to the won that did the business against Newcastle.

Predicted team 4-1-2-3: De Gea, Shaw, Varane, Maguire, Wan-Bissaka, Fred, Pogba, Fernandes, Sancho, Greenwood, Ronaldo.

Man City vs RB Leipzig prediction

With so much expectation now hanging heavy over the side, nothing but a resounding win replete with free-flowing football will be satisfactory. United have the team to do it and should even half of their superstars turn it on, they should have no problems getting the job done.

Young Boys 0-3 Man United

Head to head (h2h) history and results

Young Boys made their debut in the Champions League group stage with a clash against the three-time European champions in 2018 but were given a rude welcome with a 3-0 defeat on home soil. Pogba scored two and Anthony Martial capped off a difficult first night.

They came close to causing an upset at Old Trafford two months later, however, until a 91st minute winner from Marouane Fellaini sealed three points for Jose Mourinho’s men.
