Young Chef of the Year 2019: 16 shortlisted chefs announced for cooking competition

Young Chef of the Year has revealed the 16 shortlisted finalists for its prestigious cooking competition – and almost all of them work at London restaurants.

The chefs, all under 30, will battle it out for the accolade throughout the summer, with just one being awarded the title by organisers M Restaurants and Bookatable in early September.

The list includes chefs from acclaimed London Indian restaurants, as Kishun Chhiba is listed from Vivek Singh’s Cinnamon Club, alongside both Patrick Metselaar and Luke Bryan from Kricket.

Also on the list is Michael Turner, head chef of Gordon Ramsay’s Bread Street Kitchen, as well as Roberto Teccolo from Michelin-starred Umu.

Hotel restaurant chefs shortlisted include Matthew Hurry from Laurent at Hotel Cafe Royal, Jordan Kerridge from The Stafford London and Jamie Warley from St Ermin’s Hotel.

Lily Stock from private members' club Boodles, Milan Maffioli from Canary Wharf’s Bokan 37 and Stefano Campione from Hackney Wick’s Barge East are also among the London-based finalists.

The chefs were all selected after submitting a suggested four-course menu for consideration by M Restaurants’ culinary director Mike Reid. Throughout July, the 16 chefs will each cook at their own pop-up takeover night at M Victoria Street, where they will be judged by both restaurant industry experts and paying public diners.

The judging panel includes the likes of M Restaurant founder Martin Williams, chefs Alyn Williams, James Knappett and Sabrina Gidda, as well as the Standard’s David Ellis.
