Enthusiastic young Scouts from Burnside reaped the benefits of the great outdoors at a winter weekend camp recently.

The 20-strong troop enjoyed staying at Lapwing Lodge in the Gleniffer Braes near Paisley, which was the 113th Burnside Cubs’ third camp of the year.

But for many of the young people who attended the occasion was their first time away from their families and they all coped extremely well – gaining skills for life, while developing their confidence and resilience.

Holly Belcher, Assistant Cub Scout Leader, said: “The weekend was adventure packed with activities to suit all. Everyone had a fantastic time trying archery, laser tag in the woods, nerf wars and various spooky crafts. They earned their Entertainer badge by creating Halloween themed sketches to perform, and by telling their Halloween jokes.

Cub Leader Anne Small, said: “The Cubs enjoyed sharing their jokes and riddles, it was lovely to watch them all supporting and encouraging each other. They had such good fun”

Cubs is especially for children aged from 8 to 10-and-a-half years old, Squirrels are four to six years old, and Beavers is for those aged six to eight years.

A few weeks earlier Cubs from the 113th and from the 137th Scout pack in Rutherglen had travelled to Fife for a wild exciting weekend camp.

They joined around 500 cubs from across the whole of Scotland, for a weekend of hugely exciting activities and two nights in tents in typical autumn Scottish weather.

Holly added: “It was great to jointly plan an activity with another local pack and for the cubs to see that Scouting happens in towns and villages all across the country.

“The camp was named ‘The Howling’ and it truly was a howling success. Abseiling down a wall beside a cub from Aberdeen, or chatting over lunch with cubs from Edinburgh just showed how bonded everyone is through the Scouts.

“It was magic to see them make new friends so quickly and to take full advantage of the many activities offered by Scottish scouting volunteers”.

Squirrels from the 113th Burnside are preparing to head to an indoor camp in February, and Beavers will be going for a weekend away in the spring.
