The young dad murdered in a savage street attack for a crime he didn't commit

A young dad was brutally murdered in a Preston street in a revenge attack for a crime he didn't commit.

Jon-Jo Highton was just 18 years old when he was ambushed, yards from his front door, as he walked home from his local pub in Preston in August 2014.

Six men, dressed in black, and armed with a haul of ferocious weapons - including a Samurai sword, an axe and a hunting knife, set upon the unarmed teenager, before leaving the scene in two vehicles. Jon-Jo suffered catastrophic injuries and died at the scene.

The dad-of-one, who had survived a previous knife attack, was killed for his past associations. He was trying to turn his life around but the night before he was killed, a former associate was involved in an incident at the home of drug dealer Owen Whitesmith.

Whitesmith, 18, gathered a group to seek retribution. Jon-Jo was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Almost a decade on from the killing, which shocked Preston, Secrets of a Murder Detective looks at the police investigation which led to the conviction of six men from Preston. Three others were convicted of assisting an offender after getting involved in the aftermath of the killing.

The documentary, which is aired on channel True Crime at 10pm on Wednesday June 19, invites audiences into the intriguing realm of crime-solving with Steve Keogh, a detective with 30 years of experience, 12 of those as a top-tier murder detective.

It features interviews with Jon-Jo's family, police officers involved in the investigation and local journalists who covered the case. True Crime is available on Sky 146, Freeview 67, Virgin 148 or Freesat 135.
