Young mother-to-be 'traumatised after biting into Greggs muffin to find swarm of red ants'

An expectant mother has told how she was left traumatised after biting into a Greggs blueberry muffin to find a 'swarm' of ants.

Shareen Barnett, 20, was disgusted after the bugs emerged from the treat, from which she and a colleague had both taken large bites.

The office administrator, who is 16 weeks pregnant, said she will never eat at Greggs again after the incident, which happened at the pair's office in Downham, Bromley.

She said a "swarm" of ants came "marching" from the muffin.

Ms Barnett said: “Myself and my colleague had both bitten into it when we realised there were ants everywhere and coming from the muffin.

“We screamed and tried to kill as many as we could and immediately put the cake into the bin.

“We grabbed the hoover and tried everything to get rid of them but we noticed there were so many.

“I’m 16 weeks pregnant and as you could probably tell I was very distraught about the situation.

“I’ve contacted them and they are conducting a full investigation.”

Ms Barnett said the manager of the store was “apologetic,” but she is yet to receive a refund.

She added: “They informed me that every cake had been removed from the shelves and other stores where to be contacted as they might be contaminated.

“I’m waiting for a response regarding a refund, the manager was apologetic but I haven’t heard anything from the people above her about it.

“Nothing like this has ever happened before and I will definitely not be going back.

“I don’t think I could go to any Greggs unfortunately as I would be too scared for it to happen again.”

Greggs have been contacted for a comment.
