A 19-year-old Australian woman captured dramatic footage as she battled a blaze threatening her home in Goongerah, Victoria, on December 30.
India MacDonell said she strapped a Go-Pro to her head as she tackled flames to protect her family home. MacDonell, who remained at the Goongerah property with her father despite an evacuation order, said the pair saved their home, tanks, garden, and four cars.
“I am 19, never had any experience with fighting fires but my dad has, he showed me a bit before the fires hit, so I felt calm knowing he was confident we had fire hoses, gear and plenty of water,” MacDonell told Storyful.
“Yes it was hard and dangerous be we had a safe fire bunker if we needed to retreat,” she added, noting that the footage should not encourage other people to tackle bushfires on their own.
In the footage, MacDonell is seen using a handheld hose, shouting out “No, no, no, no!” as she runs towards a burning structure and begins hosing it down.
