A main road near a Derbyshire town remains closed seven hours after a serious collision involving a car and a lorry. Officers were called to the A444 between Overseal and Acresford, on the Derbyshire/Leicestershire border south of Swadlincote, at around 9am on Thursday (October 31).

Officers urged motorists to avoid the area, saying the road would remain closed "for some time". At around 3.45pm on Thursday, the force issued an update following the incident, confirming that a young woman was in hospital with serious injuries.

A spokesperson for the Derbyshire police said: "We were called to reports of a collision between a lorry and a car on the A444 between The Dumbles and Overseal at 9am today. Officers attended the scene and found a Scania lorry and a Seat Ibiza.

"The driver of the Seat, a woman in her 20s, was taken to hospital with serious injuries and she remains at hospital receiving treatment. Both the lorry and the car required recovery – and the road remains closed."

The one-mile closure was in place while accident investigation work takes place, according to Inrix. The traffic monitoring service, which first noted the incident at around 9.50am on Thursday, reports: "The A444 Acresford Road is closed in both directions between Acresford and Moira Road. Accident investigation work is taking place while the road remains closed, with very slow traffic building in the area."
