After being eviscerated by the Internet last year, YouTube has learned from the mistakes of its poorly received 2018 YouTube Rewind and released a very different end of year video.

Titled For the Record, the social media platform put this year’s YouTube Rewind into the hands of users - highlighting the most popular videos of 2019. Unsurprisingly, many high profile celebrities made the cut including Ariana Grande, Kylie Jenner, BTS and more.

The video broke down the most liked videos and creators in different categories, spanning music, beauty, gaming and more. The biggest win for high profile celebs came with YouTube’s ‘Most Liked Music Videos’ category, which saw real life couple Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello sweep first place with their song 'Senorita': clocking up 13.5 million likes.

Korean boyband BTS also proved themselves a force to be reckoned with - their music collab with longtime friend Halsey titled 'Boy With Luv' slid into second place with 12.8 million likes and on top of that, it also scored the title of “biggest 24 hour debut” ever for YouTube, garnering 78 million views just a day after it was released.

A fellow K-Pop group took third place, girl gang Blackpink for their song 'Kill This Love' (10.8 million). Another star having a major year took fourth, as Billie Eilish’s 'Bad Guy' earned 10.3 million likes.

While Lil Nas X dropped an endless number of 'Old Town Road' remixes, his original music video with Billy Ray Cyrus took fifth place with 9.6 million.

Despite the controversies and little barbecue tattoo debacles, Ariana Grande’s '7 Rings' music video took 6th with 9 million.

Stranger Things’ star Noah Schnapp has also been grinding away on the video platform, releasing a regular schedule of videos spanning social media challenges, Q&As and moments with stars including co-star Venus Williams and co-star Millie Bobby Brown.

He was honoured as one of YouTube’s biggest Breakout Creators this year, taking fifth place for his stratospheric rise to the top. Between June 11 and now, Schnapp saw 2.1 million subscribers sign up to his channel.

Other videos included James Charles’ epic 40 minute conclusion to the messy Tati Westbrook scandal titled No More Lies, which has 2.4 million likes (out of an overall view count of 48.07 million views).

Gaming personality and Internet cultural commentator Pewdiepie, who remains the most subscribed YouTube creator on the platform, also earned nods in YouTube Rewind for his wedding video (4.7 million likes) and as the Most Viewed Creator this year, with a staggering 4 billion people watching his content.

Other homegrown YouTube creators to feature in YouTube Rewind included Shane Dawson, Jeffree Star, MrBeast and 'Van Girl' Jennelle Eliana.

Previous versions of YouTube Rewind have seen the platform create high production films, featuring some of the most popular faces on the platform and incorporating nods to some of the biggest memes and cultural moments of the year.

While they’ve typically been well received, last year’s was a low for YouTube as the video wound up breaking records as the most disliked video ever on the platform - earning 17 million dislikes.

Featuring a cringe-worthy opening which saw Will Smith stand against a mountainous landscape, Smith declared in the first thirty seconds, "If I controlled [YouTube] Rewind, I would want Fortnite."

For reference, YouTube Rewind 2018 took the embarrassing crown of most disliked video from Justin Bieber’s 'Baby' which has a dislike count of 10 million.
