You've heard of Richmond Castle and Falls, but probably not this impressive hidden gem
During the summer months, Richmond Falls is often a popular spot occupied by Teessiders out on day trips.
And while the stunning falls and nearby castle often prove to be tourist magnets, another lesser-known sight isn't that far away - and well worth a look. Easby Abbey is one of the best preserved monasteries around, and is just a stone's thrown from Richmond.
It's found just outside of town - and the walk along the River Swale is quite something. Founded in 1152, it was ultimately suppressed in 1536 and within two years most of its buildings had been stripped and demolished.
A circular route towards the town centre, stopping off at a café, takes around two-and-a-half miles, offering some of the best sights the market town has to offer.
You can even venture slightly further to visit the castle and waterfalls. The abbey is open from 10am to 6pm daily throughout October, with car parking available at the site, signposted and is off the B6271. After October it's opening hours are cut to 10am to 4pm.
You'll find the abbey at Easby, Richmond, North Yorkshire, DL10 7EU. Expect a drive from central Middlesbrough to take around 45 minutes.
