Campaigners have demanded a 25p cut in fuel prices to help reduce the cost of living. FairFuelUK said fuel duty should be cut by 20 to 25p per litre in a similar manner to cuts seen in Europe. The campaign organisation said the price of a barrel of Brent oil was now below £80 a barrel and should signal a "considerable" reduction in filling up at the pumps.

KYIV (Reuters) -Kyiv and Moscow traded blame on Monday for the weekend shelling of Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia nuclear complex amid international alarm that their battle for control of the plant could trigger catastrophe. Calling any attack on a nuclear plant "suicidal", United Nations chief Antonio Guterres demanded U.N. nuclear inspectors be given access to Zaporizhzhia, the largest complex of its kind in Europe. Russia's invading forces seized the southern Ukrainian region containing Zaporizhzhia in March, when the site was struck without damage to its reactors.

Israeli strikes and militant rockets continued in Gaza on Sunday, 7 August, before a ceasefire came into place between Israel and Palestinian militants to end nearly three days of violence. At least 44 Palestinians, including 15 children, have died in the fighting according to Gaza’s health ministry. “I welcome the announcement tonight of a ceasefire between Israel and Gaza-based militants after three days of hostilities... Israelis and Palestinians both deserve to live safely,” US President Joe Biden said.

Detectives investigating the disappearance of student nurse Owami Davies a month ago are continuing to question a man over her alleged kidnap. Owami, 24, left her family home in Chafford Hundred, Grays and was last seen on a shop’s CCTV just after midnight in Derby Road, West Croydon on July 7.
