Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has claimed Russia is building torture chambers and kidnapping people in southern Ukraine.

Mr Zelensky called on the West to reinforce Ukraine’s weapons during a nine-minute video released on Facebook.

He accused Russian troops of carrying out “torture and kidnappings” as he claimed they “abduct representatives of local governments and anyone deemed visible to local communities.”

Also Zelensky said in the occupied parts of the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions, Vladimir Putin is trying to create separatist states by introducing Russian currency the ruble.

“This is nothing but deliberate terror. Mortars, artillery against ordinary residential neighborhoods, against ordinary civilians,” he said in the address.

Mr Zelensky also added: “We are doing everything to ensure defence. We are in constant contact with partners. We are grateful to those who really help with everything they can.

“But those who have the weapons and ammunition we need and delay their provision must know that the fate of this battle also depends on them. The fate of people who can be saved.”

Six people including a child were killed in the western city of Lviv on Monday after missiles struck military facilities and a car tyre service point, according to regional governor Maksym Kozytsky.

The city, which is in the far west of the country, has been relatively untouched by violence so far.

Ukrainian authorities in the southern region of Dnipropetrovsk also reported multiple explosions.

Missiles landed close to a railway station and other rail facilities, they said.

As fighting continues in cities across Ukraine, Mr Zelensky has warned it is vital Ukraine held control of the Donbas region or else it could mean Russian forces capture Kyiv.

He told the US network CNN: “This is why it is very important for us to not allow them, to stand our ground, because this battle ... it can influence the course of the whole war.”

Mr Zelensky also said the West needed to be faster in preparing a “new, powerful package of sanctions” against the Kremlin.

It comes amid calls for US President Joe Biden to visit the country.

Mr Zelensky said he hoped Mr Biden would travel to Ukraine but added: “It’s his decision of course, and about the safety situation.

“But I think he’s the leader of the United States, and that’s why he should come here to see.”
