Zoe Kravitz is currently taking on one of the biggest roles of her career and playing Catwoman in a new Batman film, but – she says – it's important not to let the pressure of other people's expectations make her second guess herself.

The Big Little Lies star told Variety that when her lead role casting alongside Robert Pattinson was announced she received 'more text messages and calls than I’ve gotten on my birthday, on my wedding day'.

She added that it was easy to become overwhelmed: 'All of a sudden, the reality began to sink in about what this means not only to me, but to everybody else culturally – and the fans of this universe are so dedicated and opinionated.'

Kravitz said the hype around playing the iconic character is bittersweet because, while she welcomes the nerves ('I feel it pushes me to a better place anyway'), there's also huge expectation. So she has decided to refuse to let other people's unrealistic ideas of how she should play Catwoman get to her, and instead 'go internal'.

She said: 'If you start focusing too much on what people are going to think you’re doing yourself a disservice, it’s almost like you’re putting your energy in the wrong place.

'Of course, I want to honour the fans and hope they like what I do with the role, but in order to do what I think I need to do with Catwoman I have to go internal and forget about the rest of the world.'

Sage advice that can be applied to any major life project, from planning a wedding to starting a business or managing a high pressure work project.

Kravitz and Pattinson have already begun filming The Batman. It's due for release in June next year.
