Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist's Lauren Graham has explained why she left the musical comedy's second season early.

Back in May, showrunner Austin Winsburg assured fans that the former Gilmore Girls star would likely appear in multiple episodes across the show's sophomore run if they could work around the fact that she had also signed on to do the Disney+ Mighty Ducks reboot.

Unfortunately, though, that turned out to be overly optimistic and Graham was only free to shoot something small for the season two premiere – where it was explained that her character, Zoey's boss Joan, was relocating to Singapore for work.

"Joan is only there for a wee moment (plans to do more thwarted by pandemic-related scheduling issues)," Graham wrote on Twitter ahead of time, gearing up viewers for her premature departure.

"But I'm so excited to watch the incredible [Jane Levy] and company."

"When Lauren had signed on to do Mighty Ducks, they were supposed to start shooting in March, and they were going to be done well in advance so that she could be back for season 2," Winsburg explained to TVLine after the episode aired.

"But because of the pandemic, and the way everything went down, their shooting schedule ended up being the exact same as our show's shooting schedule.

"I had plans for Joan to be in several episodes of the show,” he continued. "We just had to step-pivot, because there was no way that Lauren was going to be able to do both at the same time."

Starring Happiest Season's Mary Steenburgen, Pitch Perfect's Skylar Astin, Glee's Alex Newell, The OC's Peter Gallagher and What If's Levy in the titular role, Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist centres on a computer programmer who discovers she can hear everyone's innermost thoughts in the form of songs, after an MRI she's undergoing goes awry.

Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist airs on NBC.
