Woody Harrelson and Jesse Eisenberg have not lost their comedic timing in the 10 years since the first Zombieland movie. And that's not just on-screen.

"It's a high level of fun with these guys," Harrelson told Digital Spy. "We really have a good time."

The pair return as Columbus and Tallahassee for the sequel, Zombieland: Double Tap. A decade has passed since we last saw them, and a lot has changed.

"In this movie, it's 10 years later, the characters have the tension of being in a stale relationship," Eisenberg explained. "It has the comic tension of the odd couple, rather than new characters feeling each other out."

But there was new blood too – in particular, Rosario Dawson (as Nevada) and Zoey Deutch (as Madison), who were joined in cameo roles by Luke Wilson and Thomas Middleditch as Albuquerque and Flagstaff.

"It's interesting you said new blood," Harrelson teased. "This is a zombie movie!"

"That's exactly how we thought of them," Eisenberg said. "The new characters are really amazing. Rosario is amazing and Zoey Deutch is just brilliant. She's a brilliant comic performer."

Deutch plays Madison, a young survivor that Columbus meets in a deserted mall. She tags along with them and helps break up the stagnancy of Columbus' life.

"It's a real scene-stealer type of role," Harrelson agreed. "Every time she's in the scene you can just forget it. That's who people are going to watch."

Though it took 10 years, Zombieland: Double Tap is finally here.

"We were all wanting to get back together," Harrelson said. "But the scripts weren't right and they just kept trying and they never worked. We felt – I think I can speak for Jesse on this – we were not going to allow this movie to go ahead if it wasn't going to have the same quality as the first one."

Zombieland: Double Tap is released across the UK and Ireland on October 18, 2019
