Beauty is in the eye of the beholder – and ugliness is too.

And when it comes to ugly dogs, one has caught the eye of millions of admirers.

Zsa Zsa, a nine-year-old English bulldog, has won the World’s Ugliest Dog contest.

She claimed the title at the Sonoma-Marin Fairgrounds in Petaluma, California, on Saturday.

Her owner, Megan Brainard from Anoka, Minnesota, took home $1,500 (£1,133) because of Zsa Zsa’s win.

Zsa Zsa is known for her underbite and her long tongue that almost touches the floor.

The competition, now in its 30th year, saw 14 canines battle for the title of world’s ugliest dog.

The event is about celebrating the animals’ perceived imperfections – many of the dogs were rescued from shelters.

Dogs and their handlers had to walk along a red carpet in front of a panel of judges.

The competition included a blackhead-covered Chinese crested-dachshund mutt, a bulldog mix with excess wrinkly skin and a Pekingese named Wild Thang.

Last year’s winner was Martha – a Neopolitan Mastiff with a droopy face and a wind problem.

Zsa Zsa spent five years at a puppy farm before being purchased by the Underdog Rescue programme.

Her owner, Ms Brainard, said: “From the moment we saw her beautiful face, we knew we would be her forever home.

“We are so excited for her. She deserves this.”
