A fresh chicken from Marks & Spencer has ranked as the most likely among the UK’s main supermarkets to be contaminated with food poisoning bug campylobacter at the highest level. The latest figures from the Food Standards Agency (FSA) shows 9.5% of samples from M&S tested positive for campylobacter at more than 1,000 “colony forming units” per gram of skin. One popular salad ingredient is behind several large, deadly food poisoning outbreaks - and is regularly listed among the most dangerous foods out there. In an essay for The Conversation, Professor Tim Spector of King’s College says that beansprouts and watercress are best avoided - and killed 50 people in a recent food poisoning outbreak. In America, raw and lightly cooked sprouts have been linked to more than 30 bacterial food poisoning incidents in the last 20 years.

Pork in Asda and Sainsbury’s ‘contains deadly superbug MRSA’
Minced pork products in Asda and Sainsbury’s have been shown to contain a strain of the antibiotic-resistant ‘superbug’ MRSA in new tests. The Bureau of Investigative Journalism tested 97 British pork products - and found three which carried the potentially deadly bacteria. MRSA CC398 is less deadly than the hospital superbug - but can cause persistent infections and has already implicated in six deaths in Denmark.
