Listeria outbreak: Fresh warnings as Lidl frozen sweetcorn is included in urgent product recall

Lidl has issued a product recall on packets of frozen sweetcorn over fears they are contaminated with listeria.

The budget supermarket has issued a recall on Frozen Green Grocer’s Supersweet Corn, with best before dates until July 2020.

It is the latest product to be taken off the shelves after the Food Standards Agency (FSA) named 50 frozen products that may be contaminated with the potentially-deadly bacteria.

Lidl joins other supermarkets including Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Waitrose and Aldi, in recalling tens of thousands of packs from their freezer section.

The stores are urging customers to return any potentially-affected items for a full refund.

A frozen food plant in Hungary, which has been known to have problems with listeria contamination since 2016, is believed to be the source of the contamination.

Greenyard, which has recalled frozen corn, peas, beans, spinach and sorrel, said: ‘The recall initiative of these products does not imply that they are contaminated.’

A PHE spokesman said: ‘In the UK, there have been two deaths due to listeria linked to this outbreak. Both were in 2017 and in both cases, the individuals had underlying conditions.’

What is Listeria?

Listeria is a potentially-deadly bacteria that poses a particular threat to people over 65, pregnant women and babies – especially those less than one month old.

People who have contracted listeria may suffer symptoms similar to flu – including severe headaches, stiff neck and stomach upset.

Chills, feeling or being sick and diarrhoea are also common, but the symptoms usually disappear after a few days.

People more susceptible to listeria can develop life-threatening complications – including sepsis.

Listeria is mainly a problem with foods like frozen vegetables, soft cheeses and chilled, ready-to-eat foods like prepared sandwiches.

You can also catch it from someone else who has it – for example, if you eat food they’ve handled when they haven’t washed their hands.

Listeria can be be killed off through cooking and people are urged to wash all fresh fruit and vegetables before eating to prevent catching it.
