Farmers Demanding Fairer Prices Block Roads and Demonstrate in Spain

As many as 5,000 farm vehicles blocked a highway between Cordoba and Malaga on February 14 in one of several protests over prices in Spain’s agricultural sector.

The Spanish government announced an increase to the national minimum wage in January 2020, with farmers reportedly concerned about the impact the decision will have on their industry.

On February 5, Ivana Martinez, the general secretary of Madrid’s Farmer and Agriculture Organization, told local media outlets: “Our main demand is for a fair price for agri-food products. They should cost what they are meant to cost, and not what they are priced by big distribution and food chains, which always keep the added value.” Credit: La voz de la Subbética via Storyful
