She’s one of the longest-serving characters in Albert Square - and after nearly 30 years on the show, it’s safe to say that Dot Cotton is well and truly an EastEnders icon.
EastEnders fans up and down the country were in bits last night, as it was revealed that legendary character Dot Cotton was to be sacked from her job at the launderette. The storyline has seen the owner of the shop, Mr Papadopolous Jnr, bring in an external agency to run things, and upgrade it to offer dry cleaning services, which Dot doesn’t know how to do. Viewers watched on Thursday as Dot was interviewed by a hapless but well-meaning official from the HR department – but had to break the news to her on Friday that she’d been unsuccessful – despite her ability to get a raspberry stain out of a pair of slacks.
Colin Russell – played by former MEP Lord Cashman – made a return to Albert Square for the first time in 27 years this week, and invited former pal Dot to his upcoming nuptials. Colin first appeared in Walford back in 1986, and made history by having the first gay kiss on a British soap. At the time, he and Dot overcame her initial bigotry and homophobia (yes, Dot wasn’t the sweet little angel we know her as now) and later became firm friends.
EastEnders bosses have been spoiling us all rotten over the past month. Not content with bringing back fan favourites Peggy and Grant Mitchell, it’s now rumoured that the iconic Dot Cotton will be staying on the show for the next two years. Yes folks, Dot – played by actress June Brown - will be quoting Corinthians and chain-smoking until she’s NINETY.
Sad news this morning for EastEnders fans, after it’s been confirmed that our not-at-all-weird crush Ricky Norwood – AKA Fatboy (see also ‘Arthur Chubb’ as well as 'The Son Dot Cotton Should’ve Had’), is leaving the show!
Fans of the show are in for an early treat though, as show bosses have released not one, but TWO trailers for the show – one centred around Kathy Beale’s return from the dead, and the other giving us some clues as to what’s going down on the square in the coming months. Now we all knew that Gillian Taylforth was one of soapland’s finest actresses, but who knew she could walk the entirety of Turpin Road and Albert Square completely backwards and NOT BLINK ONCE.
We all know and love her as Dorothy Branning, Mrs., who loves nothing more than a tomato juice and a good slab of gossip and is currently residing in Walford Prison for the murder of her druggie son, Nick Cotton, but EastEnders’ star June Brown has opened up about her personal life in a recent Q&A and admitted that she is actually going deaf.
