Beyonce's Baby Bump Steals MTV Awards Show

Beyonce revealed she is expecting her first child with husband Jay-Z in spectacular style - by ripping open her jacket on stage to show her growing bump.

The Single Ladies singer announced her pregnancy at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards (VMA) in Los Angeles.

Moments earlier, she had walked the red carpet clutching her stomach as she told waiting reporters: "I have a surprise."

In an interview with Piers Morgan in June, she hinted: "I always said I was going to have a baby at 30. I'm 29 now. But I also said I was going to retire at 30. So I don't know. I'm not retiring, I tell you."

The VMAs are known for their shock factor and it wasn't the only surprise of the night.

Lady Gaga turned up at the event as her male alter ego Jo Calderone, drawing gasps from the crowd. Last year she arrived wearing a meat dress.

The controversial star picked up Best Female Video for Born This Way.

After opening the show with her single You And I she even managed to unsettle Britney Spears by trying to kiss her on stage.

Britney pulled away joking: "I've done that already" - a reference to her notorious kiss at the same awards with Madonna in 2003.

The singer picked up two gongs, Best Pop Video for Till The World's End and a Lifetime Achievement award despite being just 29 years old.

Katy Perry also bagged a double and was honoured with Best Collaboration with Kanye West for E.T. and the top award of the night - Video Of The Year for Firework.

Adele 's Rolling In The Deep, directed by Sam Brown, won the maximum number of behind-the-scene awards including direction, editing, art direction, and cinematography.

Tony Bennett led a special tribute for Amy Winehouse . The 85-year-old collaborated with the star on his new album before she died last month.

Before introducing video footage of him recording with the Back To Black singer, he said: "She was a true jazz artist in the tradition of Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday. She had the gift."
