Chelsea Begin Champs Lge Season With Win

A brilliant goal from David Luiz and a late strike from Juan Mata gave Chelsea a winning start to their Champions League campaign with a 2-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen at Stamford Bridge.

It was manager Andre Villas-Boas' debut in the competition and he gambled by resting captain John Terry and vice-captain Frank Lampard ahead of Sunday's Premier League trip to Manchester United.

Fernando Torres was recalled to the starting line-up and came close to scoring when he hooked Daniel Sturridge's cross over the bar after two minutes.

Both sides then saw goals disallowed - Simon Rofles' header for Leverkusen was ruled out for pushing, before Chelsea's Raul Meireles had a shot chalked off for offside.

It wasn't until the 67th minute that Chelsea broke the deadlock when Torres set up Luiz to rifle home from 15 yards.

Torres was the creator again at the end - squaring for Mata to score with the final kick of the game.
