Only Way Is Essex Wins Audience TV Bafta

ITV2 reality programme The Only Way Is Essex was the surprise winner at this year's TV Baftas, taking home the YouTube Audience Award.

Mark Wright, one of the stars of the show, said it felt "incredible" to take the only prize voted for by viewers.

Sherlock was named best drama series, but its lead star Benedict Cumberbatch failed to win the best actor prize.

That accolade went to Daniel Rigby, who played Eric Morecambe in the biopic Eric And Ernie.

He also beat Doctor Who star Matt Smith and two-time Bafta winner Jim Broadbent for his role in Any Human Heart.

But there was more success for Sherlock as its other star, Martin Freeman, who plays Dr Watson, was crowned best supporting actor.

In the best drama series category, Sherlock triumphed over programmes such as ITV1's Downton Abbey, as well as BBC3's Being Human and Misfits, E4's teen comedy.

The best actress prize at the Bafta awards in central London went to Vicky McClure for This Is England '86.

She overcame competition from two-times winner Anna Maxwell Martin (South Riding), Natalie Press (Five Daughters) and Juliet Stevenson (Accused).

The best supporting actress gong went to Lauren Socha for Misfits.

Sky News was up for the news coverage prize for its reporting of the Egypt crisis .

But it lost out to ITV News At Ten and its coverage of last year's Cumbria murders.

There was also a Bafta for Sky's Flying Monsters 3D - the first 3D TV programme to win an award.

Sophie Turner Laing, Sky's managing director for entertainment and news, said: "It's a truly remarkable piece of film-making by David Attenborough and the team at Atlantic Productions, and a ground-breaking first in television.

"We're very proud to have been part of Sir David's continued legacy at Bafta in black and white, colour, HD and now, with Sky, in 3D."
