Elderly Cemetery Worker Beaten In Attack

Photos have been released of an elderly cemetery worker who was beaten and robbed.

The 73-year-old, who has not been named, was set upon last night when he was about to lock up Atherton Cemetery in Manchester.

Officers said the suspect approached the man and punched him in the face.

The robber threatened to stab him, demanded money and told him not to call for help.

He suffered a fractured cheekbone when he was punched, kicked and dragged around during the robbery.

The man is also being treated for swelling, cuts, bruises and grazes on his head and face.

He stole a small amount of cash, a mobile phone, a Honda car key and a torch.

The victim's family have sanctioned the release of the photos of his injuries in the hope it will help to find the attacker.

The suspect is described as a white man in his 20s, who is six feet tall and wearing a grey tracksuit.

Detective Chief Inspector Howard Millington, from Greater Manchester Police , said: "This was a vicious attack and the level of violence used to take a few items of little financial value was wholly unnecessary."

The victim remains in hospital following emergency surgery and is still under observation.
